Feeling confused? The pieces don't fit yet. That's allowed.

In short

Feeling confused means the pieces don't fit together yet: about a decision, a person, your feelings or where you are heading. Confusion is uncomfortable, but it often comes right before a new understanding. It is the feeling of your old picture no longer working.

How it differs

Lost is confusion about your direction in life, puzzled is lighter and more curious. Overwhelm is about too much, confusion about not understanding yet.

On the feelings wheel, confused sits under surprised, next to amazed, startled. Finer words for it: puzzled, lost.

How it can show up

  • You go back and forth on a decision
  • You can't explain what you feel
  • Advice from others makes it worse
  • You feel stuck between two options

One small step

Write down the one question you are actually trying to answer. Often confusion shrinks once the real question is clear.

Box breathing: when your head is racing and you need to focus again.

A better question

What would help you see clearer: a question, a person or some time?

Ask it yourself, or someone you care about.

A sentence for your lock screen

“The pieces don't fit yet. That's allowed.”

Make it your lock screen or find it on the wheel.

Questions

How do I make a decision when I feel confused?

Ask which option you would choose if nobody would ever know. Or sleep on it and notice which one you feel relieved about in the morning.

Is it normal to feel confused about my feelings?

Yes. Feelings are often mixed. A feelings wheel can help find a more precise word.
