The Why Café

A man gets lost on a night drive and finds a café whose menu asks why he is here.
In one breath
The Why Café is a short novel by John Strelecky about a busy man who gets lost on a drive and ends up in a small café. On the menu are three questions: Why are you here? Do you fear death? Are you fulfilled? Over one night, the people in the café help him look at his own life through them.
What it's about
John is stressed, stuck in traffic and short on holiday. A wrong turn brings him to a café in the middle of nowhere. The menu comes with three questions on the back, and the waitress, the cook and a guest talk with him about them until morning.
It reads like a conversation more than a lesson. The book doesn't tell you what your answer should be. It asks why so many people spend their best hours on things they don't care about, waiting for 'someday' to start living, and what happens if you start a little earlier.
It is short enough for one evening, which is part of its charm. Many readers come back to it at turning points.
Three ideas that stay
Your purpose for existing
The book calls it your PFE: the reason you're here, in your own words. Nobody can hand it to you, but you can start asking.
Someday is a choice too
A lot of people work for years to afford a life they could start in small pieces now.
Swim with the waves
One image in the book is a sea turtle that saves its strength by moving with the water, not against it. Effort goes further where it fits who you are.
Why it inspired your friend
This is the book that started it all for me. The question 'Why are you here?' sounds big, almost too big. In the café it becomes something you can sit with over a coffee.
What stayed with me is how gentle it is. Nobody in the story judges John. They just ask, and listen. That's how I'd like to talk to the people I care about, and to myself.
If you only read one book on this page, why not this one?
Your friend. Who is your friend?
Try this, if you like
Write the three menu questions on a piece of paper tonight. Answer only the one that feels easiest.
Who might like it
For you if you feel busy but not fulfilled, or you're at a turning point and want a gentle push to think.
Maybe not for you if you want research and data. This is a fable, not a study.
